Microsoft has provided a legitimate way to get a longer trial period of it's new OS.

If you download a version of Vista off the web or have a friend who can lend you a disk you can try it on your system for 30 days before it will prompt you to buy it or enter a product key. But there is a way to extend the trial/activation time that it gives you.

In order to extend this time do the following:

  • Log into Vista with on an Admin account. (if you are not in the actual admin account you can create a shortcut to the command prompt and then enable admin control using the compatibility settings in the shortcut's properties)
  • Open Command Prompt
  • Type in 'slmgr -rearm'
  • After restarting the countdown will be reset to 30 again. This can be only done 3 times max! So if you use this command on the last day of the 30 day countdown you can extend it out to around 120 days.
If you fail to put in this code before each 30 days is up there is a way to extend it again but it's a secret, muhaha. Anyways if you are locked out you will be asked to purchase Vista from Microsoft.

I've heard of a couple, most don't work as of SP1, but I'm not going to promote stealing software. This work-around is provided by Microsoft, so I have no problem tell others about it.
